Men in RED: Really Exhilarating Dudes

Published July 31, 2014 by The Feminist

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past week, you will most definitely have noticed that the official trailer for the Fifty Shades of Grey film has been launched. (and when I say “noticed”, I of course mean “watched it at least twenty times”.) It should come to no surprise that I am looking forward to its release like people in the desert look forward to rain, or like paparazzi look forward to another Bieber incident. (For once, I am actually excited about Valentine’s Day, instead of wanting to hurl into a bucket!) To honour this marvelous trailer (and the always marvelous, (almost) always shirtless Jamie Dornan in it), I wanted to dedicate a post to the clothes which I think make a guy look sexy. Admittedly, Christian Grey – as his name suggests- sticks to an array of grays and dark hues in combination with charismatic and power-exuding suits. There is definitely nothing wrong with that. (Hell, it is darn sexy!) But if it were up to me, every guy should wear red.

From classic shades such as ruby and crimson to darker berry hues and shiny blood orange tones… these fiery colours will definitely lit up a man’s wardrobe! Not to mention what it will do to my fashion-beating, sexy-dude-loving heart!

Merely thinking about a world in which all men wore red, makes my ovaries tingle… Oh my…

So dudes, please translate some of this summer’s heat into your closet, and I am sure the warmth will simmer through all the way to next winter.

Whether you opt for a head-to-toe look or go for a more nuanced outfit with one statement red item, red will always ooze power, confidence and last but not least CLASS.

So take an example of the following designers and start embracing your inner Christian Grey.

Apparently Dolce & Gabbana must have gotten  reactions similar to mine to their campaign , because this is what their summer collection for 2015 looks like…

Splendid Summer, Splendid Shoes: Preparing for Cannes

Published July 8, 2014 by The Feminist

I am leaving for the glitz and glam of Cannes in a couple of days – *feel free to insert an envious grunt*– and since Cannes is famous for being all classy and glamourous, it is essential that I look great. (Obviously.) So no white socks in crocs for me. (Not that I would ever wear white socks… or crocs… or wear both of them together… I would rather die… but you get my drift)

Instead I’m spending a lot of time these days selecting the most fashionable of holiday wardrobes. Not just funky dresses and chic jumpsuits, but fab day outfits as well that will turn hiking into an ultra-posh event.

And with the right outfit go the right shoes. From comfy but bold to sky high and fabulous, there is one suitable pair for every occasion! Here is a list of all the types of shoes I would ideally like to take with me to Cannes. But since I am neither rich nor famous, I will always suggest a more affordable alternative as well. 😉

1) The thrill of the espadrille

A couple of years ago, these type of flats would have been “not done” in fashionable Cannes, but nowadays the classic espadrille has become so immensely popular that even the rich folk on la Croisette can no longer ban so much cooldom in one shoe.

For the rich and famous:

For mere mortals:

(both from Asos)

2) Extravagant pumps or sandals…

… preferably with some transparent detail.
If you want to ooze confidence, glam and an I-don’t-need-a-sugar-daddy-to-make-me-happy spirit, these are the shoes you need to wear!

For the rich and famous:

(by Christian Louboutin, sigh.)

For mere mortals:

(by Asos, hip hip hurray!)

3) As brogue as can be

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so, you will have noticed that women suits or hotter than hot. What used to be a solely male garment has now entered a woman’s closet as well and is regarded as the best thing since  the push up bra (or is that just me?) . The same thing can be said for the shoes that usually go with the male suit, because the so-called brogues are my favourite It-shoes. Not only does it look fab under a suit, but it is also a cool option for your summer holiday, because it is comfy and way more original than those boring ballerinas. (yawn!)

For the rich and famous:

For mere mortals:

These Are A Few of My Favourite Things: Ed Sheeran’s Multiply, Lupita’s Face and Chaotic Lingerie Sales

Published June 26, 2014 by The Feminist

things

“Some things are better left unsaid.” It’s a phrase that is often used by wannabe philosophers, big-headed people managers and women obsessed with Adele songs. And although there is some truth to be found in this statement – hell, I definitely don’t want to get in a fight with Adele fans! – I honestly believe that in most cases, the entire notion of keeping quiet is utter bullshit.

Why would you ever want to keep quiet, when you have so many brilliant things to say? Right?

Right???

So in order to illustrate how therapeutic it can be to say what is on your mind, here is a list of my favourite things that happened this week!

1)      Ed Sheeran’s X

ed-sheeran-sing-2014

I know I have said this plenty of times before, and I will keep repeating myself until everyone on this earth agrees with me, but I simply adore Ed Sheeran. He is the Man. He is my Man. And unless you’re an emotionless, grumpy guttersnipe, I really don’t understand why you wouldn’t want Ed to become your Man as well. His new album X, as in multiply, came out this week and it is –surprise!- a piece of heartfelt, genuine, musical poetry. He is able to multiply styles, genres and melodies like a true musical Einstein and shifts from acoustic ballads, to rhythmic, rocky tunes to edgy British rap. No matter what genre it is, each song sounds like a personal page from his own diary and I’m sure every listener will find a personal favourite among his wide variety of emotional songs. My personal favourites are I’m a Mess (Go figure, me too!), One (tissue!), Thinking Out Loud (more tissues!) and Take it Back (Singalong!)

Take it from me, this album will simply sweep you off your feet. In short, X does not just stand for Multiply, it also stands for Ed’s X factor.

2)      Lupita for Lancome

Lupita

As you may already have heard, Lupita Nyong’o (yes, probably the most gorgeous woman on the planet) was named the new face of Lancome a couple of months ago, and now (finally!) the first picture of the campaign has arrived.

Be still my beating heart!

Needless to say, Lupita looks as flawless as can be. Even Beyoncé – the Queen of Flawlessness-  suddenly seems a wilted flower compared to Lupita’s beautiful face. Lupita personally shared the image on her Instagram page and called it “ the secret I never intended to keep”, since the images for the campaign were originally to become public as late as September. So thank God for Lupita.

Thank God for Lupita!

3)      Lingerie. What else?

DSCN3981

You might have been wondering why I have been such an irregular blogger all of a sudden. Well, let me tell you a little secret: I am no longer part of the “young crowd”. I am no longer a university student. I am now officially a grown-up.

I have a job.

I.Have. A. Job.

A serious, adult, going-to-the-office, 9-to-5 job.

Needless to say, at first I was completely terrified (As in: “OMG, I have to pay taxes!”) and got home every night exhausted. Hence the lack of blog posts.

However, my job also has its benefits! I work for a lingerie company and today we all were invited to go to the company’s enormous lingerie sale. There was chaos everywhere: women throwing around bras and taking off their trousers in the middle of the hall, but it was by far the most awesome event of the week. I was so high on adrenaline, I thought I was going to bite someone! (Now  I know what that guy Suarez must have felt like…) I ended up buying two amazing lingerie sets, which are ridiculously expensive in store, but was able to buy for next to nothing! To avoid envious looks, I will not tell how much they actually cost or how much I paid for them, but let me just say this: Working for a lingerie company definitely has its perks!

PS: Is it weird to post pics of my newly bought lingerie, dear readers? I sincerely hope not. But if so, too bad, because with brilliant bras comes brilliant bragging!

To Clutch or Not To Clutch: It Should No Longer Be A Question

Published April 29, 2014 by The Feminist

… Because clutches are absolutely awesome.

I have to admit that over the past few years, I have always admired clutches from afar, because even though they were adorable, elegant and wickedly cool, they always seemed far too impracticable to me. Especially in comparison to the ordinary bag, which you can just swing across your shoulder and use as a hiding place for practically everything (from make-up bags to blister emergency kits).

However, it is starting to get impossible not to fall in love with a clutch. They are everywhere. And they are pretty. So so so damn pretty.

Yes, they are still the most impractical bags on the planet, but oh my sweet Lord, some of them are just works of art! So now I am sort of obsessed with them and I really really want to buy one. They are the epitome of stylish extravaganza and they can pimp any ordinary outfit and turn it into something magical. The list below contains some of my favourite designer clutches. Needless to say that I cannot afford them. But a girl can dream.

In the meantime I will spend my time looking for a more affordable clutch that is at least slightly reminiscent of some of the absolutely bonkers clutches from my list.

Perfect Outfit, Perfect Day

Perfect Outfit, Perfect Day

This is going to be a short post, dear readers. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and everyone seems to be in a state of utter delirium because of the arrival of spring.

enchanted

I am one of those people going berserk over the first beams of sun. I adore spring. I breathe spring. I am spring.

So that is why I would rather go outside and enjoy this beautiful April day instead of sitting behind my laptop writing blog posts. No offence.

But don’t worry, dear readers. I won’t leave you empty-handed. Because this post is not only a celebration of spring, it is also a celebration of the perfect spring outfit. It is feminine, funky, cool, retro, classy, elegant and quirky all rolled into one. This colourful outfit is the embodiment of a sunny perfect day, with the light blue representing the fresh breeze of air and the soft orange and coral capturing the warmth of the sun.

It is fabulous. It is spring. But first and foremost: it is YOU!

Enjoy!

Saturday Shopping Spree

Shopping is good for the soul: It elevates your mood, brings a smile to your face and just makes you really really happy. It is the equivalent of treating yourself to a spa day, but with the addition of new clothes that you can hang in your closet.

When I went shopping this week, it became clear to me how much I like pink.

I bought a pink bag.

Pink sunglasses.

DSCN3726

And a pink sweater.

DSCN3724

I’m starting to think I am a bit like Barbie, only sophisticated, with a brain and with no desire whatsoever to start a relationship with a Ken lookalike.

But pink overdose aside for a moment, what do you think of my new closet assets? 🙂

thumbsup

Ha! I thought you would do that!

Another exciting thing I would like to share with you all, is the fact that I bought orange lipstick. When I wrote about it on my blog last week, many of you confessed to loving orange lipstick. So cheered on by all you orange lipstick enthusiasts, I decided to buy one.

DSCN3730

Not surprisingly, it is the best lipstick in the world! I bought the Gelée Tangerine lipstick from Yves Rocher. It is sensuously creamy, intriguingly shiny and looks absolutely splendid with my fiery red hair and blue eyes. (Mental self-five)

If you thought things couldn’t possibly get any better, think again because my shopping spree was not yet over!  I also bought a coral pleated skirt! As you may remember from one of my previous posts (No? read it again here), I absolutely adore pleated skirts in all their flirty femininity. This one is no exception:

I kept twirling around, watching my skirt float through the air and feeling insanely glamorous…

Sigh.

Is it just me or is this spring going to be incredible?

Pleats Please: Fashion’s Newest It-Skirt

Published February 19, 2014 by The Feminist

Once worn by grandmothers reminiscent of their youth and librarians who spend too much of their time reading Nicholas Sparks’ novels, the pleated skirt is now back on everyone’s fashion radar. Whereas the classic pleated skirt was often stiff and made out of heavy fabrics and in previous years usually worn by slutty prep school teenage girls (Remember Britney Spears in Hit Me Baby One More Time?), the new version of pleats is wavy, breezy and simply gorgeous.(Think Elizabeth Taylor Hollywood glamour!)

Although pleats can be seen on practically all garments this spring –dresses, trousers, coats!- it is the pleated skirt that is most likely to stick around for quite some time and not just become a one-season trend.

So forget about old and scruffy. This season’s pleated skirt is all about embracing your own feminine coolness. Whether you opt for soft and breezy Elegance or razor-sharp Origami, these skirts will definitely get some hearts racing!

My favourite designer-pleats were those shown by Proenza Schouler: metallic, razor-sharp and yet oh-so ladylike.

pleats proenza schouler

Or what do you think about this very alluring Christian Dior skirt? Raf Simons clearly knows how to pair classic femininity with daring sexiness (that cut-out halter top!)

Salvatore Ferragamo’s version of pleats: crisp and clean with an edge

Go for black and white like Celine.

Or if you want something more affordable , this similar version at Zara is totally fab as well!

In fact, there are quite a lot of pleated skirts in the Zara Spring Collection! (So you don’t have to completely bankrupt yourself to look insanely cool and glamourous!)

No matter what style you go for and no matter the price category: pleats look pretty perfect on practically all people (Humor me for the P-overload here)

One Christmas Outfit and a Pre-Christmas Dinner

Published December 24, 2013 by The Feminist

As you may guess, I’m spending most of my time in the kitchen today. I’m in charge of creating the most ridiculously delicious but oh so easy appetizers and will bake the showstopper of all showstopping desserts: a moist chocolate raspberry and champagne cake served with champagne and raspberry jelly.

Yes, you’ve read that correctly. There will be champagne in everything. (It’s Christmas so everything is allowed 😉 ) I will try and post about the crazy food I’m cooking as soon as possible, but please don’t be mad if it will take me a couple of days. (Given the celebratory mood and the amount of booze I don’t think I will be in much of a mood to write.)

But before I treat all of you readers with my Christmas culinary creations, let me first give you an account of all the things that happened yesterday.

On the 23rd of December most people go crazy. They still have to do some last-minute gift shopping, are on a mission to find the perfect turkey or are stressing over the appropriate Christmas table decorations.

Not me.

I spent the 23rd of December watching television, putting together my Christmas outfit while singing along with Mariah Carey’s greatest Christmas hit and cooking some insanely yummy risotto.

You see, dear readers, I am a compulsive planner and control freak. Most of the time, this results in uncomfortable situations and anxiety attacks, but when it comes to Christmas Eve, my tendency to plan everything far ahead is actually incredibly beneficial. I had long finished all of my Christmas shopping and had put together the coolest decorations  weeks ago. Hence, I could now sit back with a cup of coffee and an entire plate full of Christmas chocolate truffles and enjoy my day without having to stress about a seemingly endless to-do list.

I’m not trying to make you jealous or anything. I’m sure you had a lovely time shopping at the department store, filled to the ceiling with sweaty people all looking for that perfect Christmas gift.

Anyway, let’s get down to business.

I would like you to meet my Christmas outfit: A classy black and white jumpsuit, gold embroidered high heels and a fabulous roaring twenties headband.

DSCN3445

We always celebrate Christmas with the family and since our family is really small, it is completely bonkers to opt for a breathtakingly beautiful night gown worthy of the Oscars ceremony. (Much to my dismay) So in goes a classy yet casual jumpsuit.

twenties1

What do you think?

The only thing I am slightly worried about is the fact that taking it off to –let’s say- pee, takes rather a long time. (So maybe I should limit my alcohol consumption in order to avoid spending the entire evening in a tiny bathroom? Ah, who am I kiddin’. No champagne on Christmas is like a trip to Italy without flirting with a handsome Italian stranger: impossible.)

On to the pre-Christmas food. Last Christmas I was so pre-occupied with the food I would be serving on Christmas Eve, I almost forgot to eat. Not this year. I conjured up an incredible vegetarian risotto yesterday. A sweet paprika and harissa risotto with courgette and fried halloumi. Heavenly.

DSCN3474

Ingredients:

  • 300gr risotto rice
  • 2 round courgettes( one yellow and one green), finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 long sweet red peppers
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1  ½ tsp harissa
  • 125 ml white wine
  • Vegetable stock
  • 300gr halloumi cheese, cut into 0,5 cm slices
  • Fresh basil.

Method:

  • Put the sweet peppers, harissa, smoked and sweet paprika powder and garlic in a blender and mix until you get a smooth paste.
  • Sautee the onion in some olive oil for one minute and add the rice. Fry for a couple of minutes.
  • Stir in the sweet pepper mixture and add the glass of wine. Stir until the rice has absorbed all the liquid.
  • Add the chopped courgettes and season with salt and pepper.
  • Add the stock, one ladle at a time and continue this process until your risotto is tender but not mushy.
  • Fry (or grill) the halloumi.
  • Stir some fresh basil through the risotto.

Christmas Cravings

Published December 6, 2013 by The Feminist

The season of celebration is upon us once again, dear readers.

I’m decorating the Christmas tree, listening to Mariah Carey and drawing up lists of all the things I would like to bake and cook for the big Christmas dinner.

Christmas is a time of showing  the people you love how much you care about them, which means that you will spend the next month running through town like a frantic shopaholic in search for those perfect Christmas presents.

One of the benefits of Christmas, however,  is that there is no reason why that spirit of giving shouldn’t extend to your own closet. We’ve all been good this year, so I think we deserve to be smothered in a little bit of luxury. The following list is a very thorough description  of all the material things a girl secretly desires. They are things no one can really afford- unless you’re a billionaire or married to one- but still it’s nice to at least hold on to those things in your dreams.

And who knows, maybe your dreams will come true?

PS: To all my friends and family members reading this: I really want those Elie Saab dresses 😉

CHANEL CHIC

Although Mr. Lagerfeld tends to give me the creeps (Have you noticed how his hair doesn’t move? It’s downright eerie!), I have to admit that I have a huge soft spot for Chanel make-up. I mean, look at the new exclusive edition for Christmas: it’s practically impossible to think of something that is more diva-esk!

THE YOLO DRESS

Forget the LBD. This year it’s time to be bold and beautiful. No more blending in. No more playing safe. For once it is all about standing in the spotlights. It is your time to shine! And what better way to shine than with these stunning Elie Saab dresses?

It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s de-lovely: Heart Prints in Fashion

Published December 2, 2013 by The Feminist

I’m in a romantic mood today. Seriously, my day is filled with little elements of romantic-desiring behaviour and it isn’t even two o’clock in the afternoon yet!

Need some proof? Okay, here it is:

One: I have the urge to re-watch the Notebook. Or Titanic. Will probably watch both.
Two: I’m overdosing on John Legend music.
Three: I’ve already lit four scented candles in the past thirty minutes.
Four: I bought myself a huge box of chocolates. (Admittedly, I eat chocolate every day but today I’m going particularly overboard on the cocoa)
Five: I winked at a handsome stranger.

See? I’m practically on the verge of throwing hand-cut heart confetti at everyone in the street.

Given this romantic attitude, I think it is time to highlight some very lovable fashion for you all.

For years, romantic souls like me had to deal with those dreaded skulls on every possible garment. I assume people loved this trend because it made them look tough, but to be honest, all these skulls just reminded me of death and horror movies. I mean, when people look at you, wouldn’t you want them to associate your personality with joy and love, instead of death and walking zombies?

Anyway, apparently I was one of the few who actually thought like that. But fear no more fellow romance- cravers: the era of the skull print is over!

This season’s print is all about showing love and affection. In a society in which showing emotions is –unfortunately and to my great frustration- frowned upon, this trend encourages us to step away from this collective coolness. This season, we are done remaining frozen and incapable of expressing our emotions. Let it out people!

And a first step to a more open emotional life is buying yourself some heart print clothes. This print isn’t just something you wear on Valentine’s Day, the symbol of love can be worn every single day of the year. These prints will make you feel cherished and alive. Drop that veil of calm collective posture, ladies. Trust me, it won’t make you vulnerable. It will only make you drop dead gorgeous.

This amazing trend was launched by Burberry Prorsum. The creative team behind Burberry put heart prints on practically every available piece of fabric. Apart from this very lovable print, the collection had everything a girl could possibly wish for: a silhouette of tight pencil skirts and breezy blouses, fabrics to die for (from soft cashmere to elegant leather or daring translucent rubber)and the elegant colours (beige and bordeaux) make the collection look feminine, not girly.

Now, I don’t think that will be much of a problem.

If you’re looking for a subtler approach to the trend, heart-print accessories might be something for you!

What about these adorable socks?
